Discover the ancient art of xylography, the oldest printing technique. In this practical course, you will learn to carve on wooden matrices using traditional tools (gouges and burins) to create unique and meaningful images. Through a journey that starts from preparing the matrix to the final print on fine paper, you will explore the fundamental techniques and creative possibilities of xylography. Perfect for anyone wishing to discover the art of engraving, the course is suitable for both beginners and those with experience.
Etching is an indirect intaglio technique where the matrix is engraved through etching, i.e., immersion in a natural mordant. The plate, polished and degreased, is entirely covered with a wax resistant to the mordant's action, and the engraver traces the design on it using a pointed tool.
Mezzotint, also known as black manner, smoke printing, or maniƩre anglaise, is a direct engraving technique achieved using two specific tools: the rocker and the burnisher/scraper (the double face of the same tool).
Discover various printing techniques. From the oldest hand-executed methods using a spoon and/or cuttlefish bone to those with xylographic and intaglio presses.
The course initially involves the creation of handmade paper using fabrics of different materials (linen, cotton, hemp), providing students with the opportunity to understand the entire production process. Starting from the maceration of rags, through the sizing process, and finally creating their own watermark to apply to the frame to be used, the finished product can be employed in various artistic disciplines, particularly xylography.
The course for young printmakers is designed to introduce children to the ancient world of artistic printmaking through the creation of their own engraved designs on wood or metal. Children will learn how to use the tools and follow the steps of engraving techniques in a safe and creative environment.
